Une webcam est une caméra web, à savoir une caméra branchée à un ordinateur pour transmission directe sur le web. La première webcam est mise en place en 1991 par deux ingénieurs du laboratoire informatique de l’Université de Cambridge (Royaume-Uni) pour surveiller la cafetière électrique du service (devenue célèbre sous le nom de Trojan Room coffee pot), afin d’éviter d’avoir à descendre et remonter plusieurs étages pour trouver la cafetière vide.
